Fanatics of the Luddic Path have crudely modified this ship, overloading the engines and power systems then replacing the original ballistic turret mount with a massive missile launcher, the better to execute bold alpha-strikes upon capital ships and cruisers.

The Manticore is loved by frontier officers for its ability to rapidly bring firepower to bear in small engagements and loathed by Domain strategic planners for interfering with the orderly schema of official fleet doctrine. The Manticore's oversized primary weapon mount and built-in rangefinder are a gunner's dream but allow this destroyer to easily overextend itself in battle. That, operators argue, is what the canister flak system is for - and stripping the paint off your allied ships, as the old joke goes.

–In-game description

A healthy respect for intimidating firepower in a small package see this design continue in the service of fleets of the Persean Sector. When the opportunity presents itself, pirates are particularly keen to recover a Manticore hull and apply blood-red livery to their overgunned prize.

Overview

A variant of the Manticore "upgraded" by the Luddic Path, its Medium Missiles have been replaced with Medium Ballistics instead, while its Large Ballistic now mounts Large Missiles. As is common amongst Luddic Path ships, it also goes much faster at the expense of performance in combat.

Although a strong destroyer on paper, the Manticore tends to be lacking in ordnance points and flux. Combined with lackluster shields, this relegates the Manticore to a fire support role by virtue of its need to frequently withdraw and vent flux.

With its Large Ballistic weapon synergizing with the Ballistic Rangefinder to boost its Small Ballistic weapons, the Manticore can be specialised for a fully offensive build, leaving any point defense to instead be covered by the Canister Flak system. While Salamander MRMs and other fast guided missiles might be able to land a lucky hit on the Manticore's exposed engines, Canister Flak is typically reliable as a point defence solution, and will consistently mulch entire fighter wings unfortunate enough to be caught in the spray.

The Luddic Path Manticore differs from its base counterpart in that its Ballistic Rangefinder has been stripped due to its Large Ballistic being exchanged for a Large Missile, which significantly reduces strain on its flux load and allowing even more aggressive options for its small mounts- at the cost of long-term staying power on the battlefield.

In the late game where smaller ships can get destroyed very fast by capitals, Manticore remains viable as a fire support platform. The objectively best build to do this is by using the Escort Package (preferably Smod) along with ITU and Ballistic Range Finder (already built in) hullmods to achieve maximum range available to a destroyer. Note that when Escort Package is used on a destroyer, being near a capital ship will double the effectiveness of the hullmod.
