Nova

From Starsector Wiki
Jump to navigation Jump to search

A remnant of the autonomous AI fleets developed by the TriTachyon Corporation. Illegal under Domain (and Hegemony) law, and an abomination to the Church of Galactic Redemption, the First AI War saw these creations purged from the Sector. At least that is how the official histories tell it.

Although operationalized in the Retribution design, the Orion Drive was never popular with crew or naval architects due to the great strain each jolt the propulsion system inflicted upon flesh and hardware. The Nova overcomes such limitations by dispensing with human crew altogether. The Orion Drive design thus freed from most burdensome constraints, every aspect could be upgraded to higher power levels using cutting-edge weapons technology and advanced solid-state Tri-Tachyon-designed components. The result is an AI-operated battlecruiser capable of fearsome speed and firepower.

–In-Game Description

Encountered as part of Sub-Ordos and Ordos, the Nova features a powerful array of frontal firepower, which it could put to great use as part of a battle line, using its system to close gaps to vulnerable targets. As piloted by the AI, however, the ship's high speed means it is often the first to make contact with the opposing fleet, and its wild charge forward will quickly see it flanked due to lack of an omni shield, long hull and a surprisingly small shield arc. Even so it's still far harder to bring down than the Retribution, due to its superior armor and greater shield efficiency.

The Nova's preferred targets are hulls that are smaller in size, as its heavily focused frontal firepower and high mobility allows it to easily overwhelm smaller vessels and break the enemy battleline. However, it still possesses considerably less firepower compared to the Radiant, so it may not be able to overwhelm enemy capital ships as easily.

Notes

The Red Planet quest always features either Nova or a Radiant defending said planet alongside a few escorts, potentially making it a good opportunity to obtain this ship without having to engage a full Ordo or Sub-Ordo.
