A remnant of the autonomous AI fleets developed by the TriTachyon Corporation. Illegal under Domain (and Hegemony) law, and an abomination to the Church of Galactic Redemption, the First AI War saw these creations purged from the Sector. At least that is how the official histories tell it.

–In-game description

Leaked internal memos criticize the Apex for compromising core combat principles to act as a marketing platform for advanced combat systems. These include the Tri-Tachyon 'Energy Bolt Coherer' - speculated to employ a quirk of shield physics to increases the range of non-beam energy weapons, which the Apex may mount in abundance - and dual Terminator Drone autoforge units. The Terminator systems' sub-AI certification was pending when made entirely moot by certain subsequent historical catastrophes, including but not limited to the First AI War.

–Additional Codex description

Overview

The Apex-class Heavy Droneship is a automated cruiser-sized battlecarrier fielded by the Remnants. A peculiar ship, it possesses four synergy mounts, built in Energy Bolt Coherer hullmod which extends the base range of all non beam energy weapons by 200, and 2 built in Terminator drone wings.

Availability

Being an automated hull, it’s never seen anywhere in the Core Words, the only way to acquire an Apex is to go toe to toe with the Remnants. The Automated Ships skill is needed to recover this hull. It can only be sold on black markets.

Notes

Terminator Drones

The Apex is accompanied by 2 wings of 2 Terminator drones that behave like normal fighters. They have an engagement range of 0, which forces them to stay around the Tempest. Each Terminator Drone has a PD Laser and an IR Pulse Laser, along with the Terminator Core hullmod, which massively amplifies its effectiveness against fighters and missiles. Though not very sturdy, these drones are elusive and provide good firepower with a 360 coverage, complementing the main ship, considering that the Apex otherwise only has 2 small energy mounts to cover for its vulnerable stern.

The Apex's Termination Sequence turns the Termination Drones into missiles that seek out enemy ships, ignoring anti-PD flares. The drones are still capable of using their armament in this process.

Tips and strategies

Damagetype energy.png The following section contains user-submitted suggestions, these may be inaccurate or outdated.

The Apex possesses a somewhat lackluster flux dissipation rate, only slightly better than light cruisers like the Falcon and slightly worse than that of the Fury. As tempting as it sounds to fill all of its medium slots with energy weapons to take advantage of the Energy Bolt Coherer, doing so will cause the Apex to overflux itself within no time unless Safety Overrides is applied. Therefore, it's advised to install missiles on the medium synergy hardpoints.

Small energy weapons such as the IR Pulse Laser and the Antimatter Blaster can become very viable on the Apex, as the built in Energy Bolt Coherer boosts their base range to levels comparable to medium energy weapons (700 and 600 su respectively).

Despite its very wide hull presenting a relatively easy target to hit, the Apex can still be annoyingly difficult to destroy as it combines a high efficiency shield with armor/hull levels of a heavy cruiser, and every AI core piloting it will have Impact Mitigation and Damage Control skills.

Trivia

  • The Apex is the first Remnant hull not to be directly named after something associated with light, but it's more than likely named after the "Solar Apex".
