A medium range gun designed to punch through heavy armor. The raw damage output also enables it to overwhelm weaker shield emitters.

A truly devastating weapon platform, named for an archaic god of volcanoes. A typical turret mount features two L/89 barrels that take turns firing armor-destroying rounds at 240 RPM. An electro-magnetic ejector, powered feed system and nanocoolants allow the weapon to fire for extended time periods. The shaped charge shells have low muzzle velocity and great armor penetrating power.

–In-Game Description

The Hephaestus Assault Gun is a large ballistic weapon, rapidly firing high-explosive shells.

Notes

The Hephaestus has much lower damage per shot and higher OP cost than the Hellbore Cannon, but has nearly twice the DPS and greater ease of use, particularly against fighters and other small targets. It is thus more effective when surplus OP and flux dissipation are available, except against very heavily armored targets.

The Hephaestus is effective at dealing hull damage to heavily armored targets. All ships retain 5% of their maximum armor for the purposes of damage reduction to hull, which can substantially lower the DPS of kinetic and/or low caliber weaponry. The HAG's shot size is sufficient to sustain high DPS, making it a good way to secure kills.
