Agriculture is a trade and technology as old as civilization itself; for thousands of cycles Humanity has harnessed the power of natural, modified, and artificial biological machines for sustenance. So it has always been, so it shall be so long as humans are human.

–In-game description

Farming is an industry. It can be built on any Colony with access to Farmlands, and cannot be built on planets that lack this resource.

Construction

Farming costs 75,000¢ to build and has a build time of 60 days.

It will refund 56,250¢ when shut down.

Upkeep

Farming has a base upkeep of 500¢ * (colony size - 2).

Effects

Farming does not provide any benefits to the colony.

Production

Farming produces the following commodities:

  • Food: equal to colony size + the farmland's modifier (between -1 and +2)

Demands

Farming demands the following commodities:

A shortage of Heavy Machinery will reduce the production of Food by an amount equal to the shortage.

AI Cores

Farming receives the following perks from the assignment of an AI Core:

Additional Buffs

In addition to Alpha Cores, Soil Nanites can be installed on planets without transplutonic ore or volatile deposits, which will increase production by +2 and increase Pather interest by 4.

Solar shades can be found orbiting some worlds (in the core worlds, notably Eventide and Eochu Bres), which increase the production of food by +2 units. These can be found rarely orbiting planets outside the core worlds and will have the same effect if colonised. These cannot (for now, anyway) be added to worlds which do not have them.

You can also invest Story Points once per Farm to increase production by +1.

With the Luddic Majority market condition, production can be increased by +1/+2, though it will also attract Unwanted Attention.

Notes

  • On Water planets, Farming is replaced by Aquaculture, which requires additional Heavy Machinery (equal to colony size), suffers a higher upkeep & initial build cost. Aquaculture can produce Volturnian Lobster if built on the planet Volturn in the Askonia system, in addition to the typical Food production.
  • Food tends to be the highest value import and export as every colony, regardless of size, demands it, resulting in a very large market. It's very easy without any commerce to generate 80,000¢ - 100,000¢ credits per month without any particular effort.
  • This also means that having food within your faction is a great way to reduce hazard penalty as every colony requires it.
