Baikal Daud
"The Gates are the question behind the entire Hegemony, are they not? Is the Domain out there waiting to reward those who kept faith, blindly loyal for generations? Or was there some grand catastrophe, and nothing awaits us but ruins and the dead? Or will monsters from Ludd's own nightmares pour out to devour us all- unless we are armed and steadfast, ready to meet their threat?" | ||
–Baikal Daud to the Player[1] |
Baikal Daud is the High Hegemon, the leader of the Hegemony faction.
Appearance
Daud is shorter than he is made to appear in the holos, which exaggerate his height for "image" purposes.[1]
Biography
Daud grew up in the hive-cities of Chicomoztoc, the capital world of the Hegemony.[2][3]
In c.190 during the Second AI War, as a patrol commander, Daud encountered the Tri-Tachyon Astral-class carrier TTS Ephemeral and pursued it into the Atlantian Molecular Cloud by cleverly not following its last known trajectory. The Ephemeral's Captain-Director, thinking Daud's small force (led by a Dominator-class cruiser) to be easy prey, turned and engaged, only to be sunk.[2]
When Tri-Tachyon launched a mass assault on Chicomoztoc in c.194, Daud called for the Hegemony to undertake emergency commissioning of civilian ships, both on and off the official auxiliary list. The resulting hastily assembled but huge fleet repelled the TT attack and ended the war with a Hegemony victory.[4][5]
As one of the heroes of Chicomoztoc,[6] Daud eventually became High Hegemon, but this generated resentment among the old nobility within the Hegemony officer corps based on Eventide.[3][7]
When the Galatia Academy was working on reactivation of the Gate Network, Provost Anahita Baird arranged a meeting between the player character and Daud, under the guise of the player being an emissary from Horus Yaribay of the Persean League. Daud granted permission for the needed experimentation, and may have received Gens Yaribay cryptokeys to open a communications channel with that house of the League.[1]
