Gates are large ring-shaped structures found when exploring the Sector. Originally the primary means of interstellar travel, their sudden and complete inactivation precipitated the Collapse of the Persean Sector, leading to the events of the game.
Outside the Core Worlds, gates commonly host ship graveyards, those that got stranded by the collapse; usually, combat-oriented ship derelicts can be found here. Derelicts orbiting the gate may carry Survey Data, sleeper pods, and information regarding other derelicts in the sector. A stable debris field may also be present and can be salvaged for valuable salvage.
Players can check the list of discovered gates in the Intel screen.

Once the "At The Gates" mission is begun, the player can scan inactive gates to activate them. The Janus Device acquired at the end of that mission allows jumping between any two scanned gates. Active gates have unique glowing appearance, a new icon in Intel, and a different description.
Jumping through gates cost half the fuel of traveling the same straight-line distance through hyperspace and is also instantaneous.
The player fleet will not automatically navigate using gates; the player must manually fly to / from and use gates.
