"Yes! It's all rather over-engineered when a simple software patch will do. It's fascinating to see how they've applied these principles to, ah, the hardware application. Experimentation and instrumental aspects of research were never my strong point. I was into theory. Now that I'm back at the Academy, with the resources Baird is giving me..."

–Scylla Coureuse on the ISS Hamatsu modifications[1]

Scylla Coureuse is an Academician at the Galatia Academy. She led the development of the Janus Device.

Biography

Coureuse grew up on the Persean League world of Fikenhild in the Westernesse Star System. She joined the Galatia Academy and served as a hyperspace physics researcher, described by Provost Anahita Baird as "the keystone of the theory team behind the jump-point experiments", but left at some point (perhaps following the Galatia incident of c.206).[2]

After her departure, Coureuse was coerced by the League intelligence service to work on a secret project on Laicaille Habitat, in the Isirah Star System. Baird directed the player character to track down Coureuse, either by following leads with family and friends on Fikenhild, or tracking experimental packages operated by her former Academy department. The player found evidence that the League intelligence operation was badly compromised, and presented this to the archon of Laicaille. Shaken, the archon terminated the operation and allowed Coureuse to go free. The player gave her a message from Baird to persuade her to return to the Academy.[2]

Back in Galatia, Coureuse worked on the Janus Device prototype using information from the Kallichore Archive and Project Ziggurat, but was stymied by having to construct a revolutionary new device with primitive engineering equipment. After the first device test ended in near-disaster and an irate Baird demanded results, Coureuse asked to secure the assistance of her ex-lover and hardware expert Elissa Zal. In truth, Coureuse and Zal had withheld the working Janus Device as leverage over Baird. The player rescued Zal, who was being held as a semi-prisoner of Warlord Kanta, and returned to the Academy with the help of a working Janus. Coureuse and Zal escaped from Baird prior to the public announcement of the successful Janus development; their whereabouts since are unknown.[3]
