An Ice Giant
A giant planet composed primarily of water, ammonia and methane. Within the depths, gravity generates enough pressure to form a core of metallic hydrogen.

–In-Game Description

An Ice Giant is a Planet type that can be found within the Persean sector.

They are typically found in the other reaches of a System, or anywhere within a system without a source of light or heat like a Black Hole system or a Nebula system.

They can also be scanned with an Active Sensor Burst to gain +5 Hyperspace Topography.

Resources

Ice Giants are guaranteed to have only volatiles

These planets typically have:

Market Conditions

Gravity high.png High Gravity (+50% hazard rating & -10% accessibility) will always be an attribute of Ice Giant worlds.

Ice Giants will always have either Cold.png Cold (+25% hazard rating) or Cold extreme.png Extreme Cold (+50% hazard rating), usually the latter..

Ice Giants will usually have either Poor light.png Poor Light (+25% hazard rating) or Darkness.png Darkness (+50% hazard rating), though also neither.

Other market conditions that can appear are:

It can also have:

  • Irradiated.png Irradiated (+50% hazard rating) if it's in a sole Neutron Star system.

Varying degree of Ruins can also be found on Ice Giants.

Colony

Ice Giants primarily serves as a host to the Mining Industry, however, as volatiles are the only possible resource and combined with the myriads of possible market conditions increasing hazard rating, Ice Giants are seldom worth colonizing.

A Commerce can also be used to capitalized on the meagre income from Mining.

Special Items

A Plasma Dynamo is of great use on a Mining Industry and can justify colonizing one, it's also the easier way of meeting the volatiles demand from an Orbital Fusion Lamp.

Orbital Fusion Lamp can be used to counteract the increased hazard rating from Cold or Extreme Cold and Poor Light or Darkness.

And as with all non-habitable worlds, a Heavy Industry/Orbital Works with a Corrupted Nanoforge/Pristine Nanoforge can work well too if the hazard rating is low enough or if needed.
